Mazda Roadster NR-A

Racing Modified ND
Mazda Roadster ND NR-A
The trackday focused NR-A models have been around since 2001 when the first NB2 variant was launched. These Roadsters are offered by Mazda as an affordable route to single series motorsport. They usually come stripped of luxury features found on higher spec models but include the performance related parts like stiffer suspension and chassis bracing. Both the NB and NC models were also offered with specific race inspired optional modifications.

This latest ND model in the NR-A series follows a similar formula. Based on the lowest spec "S" grade the new NR-A is essentially an export market 2.0 chassis with a base spec interior and the 1.5 engine with 6-speed manual gearbox. The colour choice is the same as found on the other models.

Additional parts over the regular S grade include the rear sway bar, front suspension tower brace, silver 16" alloy wheels, basic steering wheel with no switches, larger brakes from the 2.0, black 3rd brakelight cover, height adjustable Bilstein suspension, larger radiator for better cooling on track, and the Super-LSD with an improved casing from the 2.0 model that features cooling fins. Mazda's published weight for this model is 1010kg.

A range of race inspired shop options are available, and will likely be mandatory equipment for the one-make party race series. The parts include front and rear tow hooks (for track use only), Mazdaspeed branded bucket seats and harness, and a complete 6 point rollcage with harness and door bars. The rollcage is designed not to interfere with the roof and is available with safety padding for road use.

The NR-A model is priced at 2,646,000 JPY which places the car just between the basic S and the mid range S Special Package. It would be an ideal car for those buyers who want to go back to basics and can do without superfluous gadgets. Sadly there is no indication of this spec being available outside of Japan.
