The MX-5 Sport Recaro is the first ND special edition for the UK market. This car is based on the top specification 2.0 Sport Nav model and includes additional exterior parts for more sporty looks combined with some added interior refinement. The Recaro model was intended to celebrate Mazda's 30 year association with the Recaro brand.
The most notable upgrade are the Recaro heated leather & alcantara seats which give this edition its name. These seats have been available in other markets slightly earlier than in the UK so it's nice to see them featured here. The interior also benefits from the alcantara dashboard trim which adds a premium touch to the cabin.
The car underneath is a Sport Nav grade so has Bilstein suspension, LSD, climate control, and the premium Bose 9-speaker stereo & navigation system. Newly added parts include a set of alloy pedals & optional special carpet mats. The Sport Recaro's interior also gets a numbered badge showing the build number out of the 600 available.
The exterior is fitted with the full Mazdaspeed aero kit finished in Brilliant Black. This kit includes the rear under skirt, side skirts, rear bootlid spoiler, and the front lip spoiler. Also added are gloss black door mirrors in place of body colour. Then there are the 17" diamond cut alloy wheels with the MX-5 logo engraved into the rim. A similar version of these wheels are optional on other models.
Only two colours are available with buyers having a choice between Ceramic and Soul Red metallic paint. The aero kit has a gloss black finish and it fits well with both colours, matching the windscreen surround and door mirrors. Soul Red is already proving very popular, so this model could be seen as an attempt at too boost the Ceramic colour's sales.
There are no mechanical or performance upgrades with this model, but the combination of aero kit and Recaro seats should make it very attractive for those who didn't rush to be the first to buy one of the regular models.
The MX-5 Sport Recaro is priced from £24,295 which is £1000 more than the equivalent Sport Nav. This is something of a bargain considering what's included. The cost of the full aero kit itself is over £1000, the wheels and Recaro seats adding a few thousand more.
