Thanks to the success of the third generation's retractable hardtop models, Mazda chose not to pursue a detachable hardtop for the new MX-5. The designers did however have the foresight to include mounting points on the body for third party roof designs to attach to. One such design is the new Rallybacker hardtop from Spark Craft.
This design is unusual in that it actually sits over the raised soft top so doesn't have a rear window of its own. The attachment points are temporary which makes for a quick and simple install. The hardtop itself is so lightweight it can easily be handled by just one person, a far cry from the original heavy hardtops with their glass rear windows.
