The MX-5 RF Sport Black is the second special edition model for 2018, following on from the soft top Z-Sport. You'll immediately notice this model's colour as the new Eternal Blue mica. This blue is now making an appearance in the UK and replaces the older Reflex Blue.
It's not quite as nice as the older Winning Blue or Aurora Blue but it's certainly an improvement in my eyes. Eternal Blue would normally cost £550 but here it is included free of charge.
Despite being named "Sport Black" this version of the RF is based on the lower specification 2.0 6-speed manual SE-L Nav trim level. This means no Bilstein sports suspension, no premium BOSE stereo, and no strut brace.
So what do you get over a regular RF SE-L Nav? Well the main difference is a seat upgrade. The seats are now heated black leather with red stitch rather than heated black cloth. Then there a couple of additional gadgets such as auto windscreen wipers, auto headlights, and rear parking sensors.
The interior also gets unique carpet mats, MX-5 logo sill plates, and a rather plain looking badge for the dashboard. The gloss black rear lip spoiler taken from the accessory catalogue is also included. Gunmetal 17" alloy wheels and gloss black door mirrors are standard fit on the 2.0 SE-L Nav, so the additional equipment on offer here is minimal.
If you're in the market for a base model 2.0 RF and fancy a blue one, the Sport Black could be worth looking at. They go on sale at the end of May, priced at £25,695 with 300 available.
