The MX-5 California was a 1995 special edition for the UK market. This car was based on the mid-range 1.8i model but came with upgraded five spoke 15" alloy wheels and wider 195/50/15 tyres than the standard cars. Other special features included a rear 'California' badge, power steering, a numbered badge on the centre console, an owner's document wallet, and an upgraded Clarion stereo system. The 1.8i engine produced 130Bhp at 6500rpm and enabled the MX-5 to reach a top speed of 123mph and 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds.
The car's main selling point was the unique Sunburst Yellow paint colour which certainly made this particular MX-5 stand out from the rest. The California model was fairly exclusive as only 300 were available, and it would be several years before another yellow MX-5 appeared at UK dealerships.
