You can use the chart below to confirm your UK MX-5 Vehicle Identification Number matches the basic specification of the car. Note that this number does not reveal information about the car's colour, trim, or any optional extras fitted. For full details you will need to contact a Mazda dealer and ask them to check the VIN on their systems. Build numbers for the first ND series started at 100001.
There are several white & silver laser-etched security stickers showing the VIN on the car. Be sure to check they all match up and haven't been tampered with. They can be found on or near the following locations:
Front bumper near the headlight
Offside Door jamb front
Offside Door jamb rear
Offside Door edge
Nearside Door jamb front
Nearside Door jamb rear
Nearside Door edge
Underside of bootlid
Underside of bonnet
The dashboard also has a VIN label which is visible at the base of the windscreen. A larger black sticker should be present on the driver's door jamb. This one shows the full VIN as well as the maximum allowed weight of the car including all passengers and luggage and the max load over each axle, the blank indicates the MX-5 is not permitted to tow.
Japanese market cars use an 11 digit VIN consisting of the chassis code ND5RC followed by the 6 digit build number eg: ND5RC-136834. This is another way of identifying a grey import.
The RF retractable fastback model uses the chassis code NDERC.
